Remembering the Cost, Guarding our Freedom

Memorial Day is a Sacred Pause to Reflect our National Freedom.

The freedoms we enjoy in this great country were not secured by party platforms, political speeches, or legislation alone. They were purchased, in a very real sense, with blood. The foundation we stand upon was built by millions of Americans who laid down their lives so we could continue to live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Many of these men and women you and I will never meet this side of eternity. Yet they stood in harm’s way, far from home and family, so that we could worship freely, speak openly, assemble publicly, and live peacefully in this beautiful land called America.

On this Memorial Day, we honor them. And as followers of Jesus, we also look through their sacrifice to a greater freedom and a greater sacrifice.

Remembering Those Who Fell…

It is fitting and godly to honor those who have fallen in battle. Their lives echo the heart of what Jesus said:

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

Today we remember parents who never came home, children who grew up without fathers or mothers, spouses who learned to walk with God through the valley of the shadow of death. We remember rows of white stones, folded flags, and stories that bring both tears and gratitude.

As we remember, we should allow that remembrance to soften our hearts, not harden them; to humble us, not make us proud in ourselves; to stir us to thanksgiving, not entitlement.

Remembering the Freedoms They Protected…

Let us remember the soldiers who shed their blood but also remember the freedoms they were protecting.

For the believer, some of those freedoms are especially precious:

  • The freedom to worship Jesus Christ openly
  • The freedom to preach and hear the gospel without fear
  • The freedom to gather as the church, to pray, to evangelize, to serve

The apostle Paul urged Timothy:

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” (1 Timothy 2:1–2)

A “quiet and peaceable life” is not something we are owed; it is a gift from God, often secured and maintained at great earthly cost. When you walk into a church building this weekend without fear of arrest or violence, pause and give thanks for the Lord’s mercy, and for those who have stood guard over that peace.

The Greater Freedom in Christ…

Yet even as we honor earthly sacrifice, we must lift our eyes to the greatest sacrifice and the greatest freedom: the cross of Jesus Christ.

“Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

Nations can provide political freedom, but only Christ can give spiritual freedom from sin, from guilt, from the fear of death. Governments can protect rights, but only Jesus can cleanse a conscience and write God’s law upon our hearts.

Every fallen soldier reminds us of the One who willingly laid down His life, not to secure one nation’s liberty, but to open the way of salvation for all who believe:

“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:6)

On Memorial Day, let the blood-stained pages of our national story remind you of the blood-stained cross on Calvary’s hill. One bought us civic freedom; the other offers eternal life.

Today’s Prayer:

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, we come before You with grateful hearts on this Memorial Day.

We thank You for the men and women who have laid down their lives for this nation. We honor their sacrifice, and we ask that You comfort every family who still feels that loss. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard their hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Lord, we acknowledge that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). The freedoms we enjoy are ultimately gifts from Your hand. Forgive us where we have taken them lightly, complained instead of given thanks, or used our liberty for ourselves instead of for Your glory.

Holy Spirit, fill us afresh today. Teach us to “stand fast… in the liberty by which Christ has made us free” and not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1). Empower us to live lives worthy of the gospel, to shine as lights in this generation, and to love as Jesus loved.

We pray for America. Have mercy on our land. Heal our divisions. Turn our hearts back to You. Raise up leaders who fear You, honor truth, uphold justice, and protect what is good. Let Your church be bold in witness, rich in love, and steadfast in prayer.

Lord Jesus, we look to You as our ultimate Champion and Redeemer. You laid down Your life and took it up again. You are our hope, our peace, and our freedom. On this Memorial Day, we remember the fallen, and above all, we remember You. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
