Empowered for Kingdom Purpose

You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone!

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8)

One of the greatest mistakes believers make is attempting to accomplish God’s work through human strength.

The Christian life is impossible apart from the Holy Spirit.

  • You cannot consistently love your enemies through human effort alone.
  • You cannot walk in supernatural boldness through human effort alone.
  • You cannot fulfill God’s calling through human effort alone.

That is why Jesus instructed His disciples not to begin ministry until they received the promise of the Father.

For three years they had walked with Jesus.

  • They had witnessed miracles.
  • They had heard His teaching.

Yet Jesus still told them to wait for the Holy Spirit.

Why? Because information without empowerment is insufficient.

Acts 1:8 declares: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”

The Greek word for power is dunamis, which means miraculous power, explosive ability, and supernatural enablement.

The Holy Spirit does not merely comfort believers. He empowers believers.

Pentecost Changed Everything

Before Pentecost:

  • Peter denied Jesus.
  • The disciples hid behind locked doors.
  • Fear controlled their decisions.

After Pentecost:

  • Peter preached boldly.
  • Thousands were saved.
  • Miracles occurred regularly.
  • The Church exploded with growth.

The difference was the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

The same Spirit that empowered the early Church is available to believers today.

Spiritual Gifts Are Kingdom Tools

Paul teaches: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

Notice that every believer receives gifts.

  • Not some believers.
  • Not only pastors.
  • Not only missionaries.

Every believer.

  • Some are called to teach.
  • Some encourage.
  • Some lead.
  • Some serve.
  • Some evangelize.
  • Some pray with extraordinary faith.

Every gift is important because every gift contributes to the growth of God’s Kingdom.

  • The enemy wants believers to think they are insignificant.
  • The Holy Spirit wants believers to discover their purpose.

When God called Gideon, he saw himself as weak and unqualified.

Yet God addressed him as: “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (Judges 6:12) God saw what Gideon could become through divine empowerment.

When the Angel of the Lord appeared, Gideon was not standing on a battlefield leading an army.

  • He was not performing miracles.
  • He was not conquering enemies.
  • He was not acting like a mighty warrior.

In fact, Gideon was hiding. The Midianites had oppressed Israel for seven years. They would invade the land, steal crops, destroy livestock, and leave the Israelites living in fear and poverty.

When God found Gideon, he was threshing wheat in a winepress rather than on a threshing floor. A threshing floor was usually located in an open, elevated area where the wind could separate the grain from the chaff.

A winepress, however, was low, enclosed, and hidden.

  • Why was Gideon there?
  • Because he was afraid.

He was trying to protect what little food remained from being stolen by the enemy. Yet it was in that moment of weakness, fear, and insecurity that God appeared and declared: “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

Imagine Gideon’s reaction. He must have looked around wondering who God was talking to.

Because nothing in his current circumstances seemed to support that description.

  • His situation said fear.
  • His emotions said weakness.
  • His surroundings said oppression.

But God called him a mighty man of valor.

Why? Because God was not speaking to Gideon’s present condition. God was speaking to Gideon’s potential under divine empowerment.

God Sees Beyond Our Present Reality

One of the beautiful truths of Scripture is that God sees beyond who we are and sees who we can become through His grace.

People often define us by our failures… God defines us by His purpose.

People see weakness… God sees strength.

People see insecurity… God sees leadership.

People see limitations… God sees possibilities.

Gideon saw a frightened farmer… God saw a deliverer.

Gideon saw inadequacy… God saw an instrument through which a nation would be rescued.

The Lord was speaking prophetically into Gideon’s future.

God’s Presence Creates Our Potential

Notice the first part of the statement: “The LORD is with you…”

Before God addressed Gideon’s identity, He reminded him of His presence. This is important because Gideon’s future victory would not come from his own ability.

It would come from God’s presence.

  • The source of Gideon’s courage was not Gideon.
  • The source of Gideon’s strength was God.
  • The source of Gideon’s success was God.

Many believers spend too much time looking at their own limitations.

“I don’t have enough experience.”

“I don’t have enough education.”

“I’m not gifted enough.”

“I’m not qualified.”

Neither was Gideon.

But God’s call has never depended upon human adequacy… It depends upon divine presence.

The Lord did not say: “Gideon, you are mighty because of your talent.”

He said: “The LORD is with you.” Everything changes when God is with you.

God Often Calls Us Before We Feel Ready

One of the patterns throughout Scripture is that God frequently calls people before they feel prepared.

  • Moses said he could not speak.
  • Jeremiah said he was too young.
  • Peter was impulsive and unstable.
  • David was overlooked by his own family.

Yet God used them all.

Why? Because God specializes in empowering ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.

The Kingdom of God has never advanced through human strength alone. It advances through surrendered vessels filled with the power of God.

Gideon’s Transformation

As the story unfolds, Gideon begins exactly where many believers begin.

  • He questions God.
  • He struggles with doubt.
  • He asks for confirmation.

Yet God patiently walks with him.

Little by little, Gideon’s faith grows. Eventually, the man who once hid in a winepress stands before an army.

  • The man who once lived in fear tears down idols.
  • The man who once questioned God leads Israel into victory.

What changed?

  • God’s presence.
  • God’s calling.
  • God’s empowerment.

Gideon became the man God already saw.

A Word for Every Believer

Many believers are living in a spiritual winepress.

Fear has confined them. Disappointment has limited them. Past failures have defined them. Insecurity has silenced them. Yet God still speaks over His people.

  • Not according to what they currently see.
  • Not according to what others have said.
  • Not according to their past.
  • But according to His purpose.

The Lord sees the evangelist before the first soul is won.

  • He sees the teacher before the first lesson is taught.
  • He sees the leader before the first opportunity appears.
  • He sees the prayer warrior before the breakthrough comes.
  • He sees the mighty man or woman of God hidden beneath layers of fear, doubt, and insecurity.

God does not merely see where you are. He sees who you can become when fully yielded to Him.

Connection to the Holy Spirit

This is why the mission of the Church requires the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables believers to become what God has called them to be.

  • Peter became a preacher.
  • Timothy became a leader.
  • Paul became an apostle.
  • Gideon became a deliverer.

Not because they were naturally extraordinary, but because God empowered them. The same Holy Spirit who transformed Gideon is still transforming lives today.

Today’s Challenge:

Stop viewing yourself solely through the lens of your weaknesses.

Ask yourself:

  • What has God spoken over my life?
  • What gifts has He placed within me?
  • What fears are preventing me from walking in His calling?

Choose one step of faith today that moves you closer to becoming the person God has called you to be.

Today’s Prayer:

Father, thank You that You see beyond my weaknesses and failures. Thank You that Your plans for my life are greater than my fears and limitations. Help me to believe what You say about me rather than what circumstances say about me. Fill me afresh with the Holy Spirit and empower me to walk in the calling You have placed upon my life. Give me courage to step out in faith and confidence in Your presence. May I become everything You have destined me to be for Your glory. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
