Day 2 – Hunger for God
(Matthew 5:6) “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”
Hunger is never accidental, it is a indicator. It tells us that something essential is missing and must be supplied. During a fast, physical hunger becomes more noticeable, but beneath that sensation lies a deeper reality: the human soul was designed to hunger for God. Every longing, craving, and restlessness in our hearts ultimately points back to Him.
Too often, we attempt to quiet spiritual hunger with temporary substitutes like busyness, success, entertainment, comfort, or even religious activity. Yet none of these were ever meant to satisfy the deepest parts of us. Only God can fill what He alone created. When spiritual hunger is ignored, the soul grows restless; when it is misdirected, the soul grows weary. But when it is properly aimed, hunger becomes a doorway to blessing.
Jesus does not rebuke hunger, He blesses it. He declares that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are not lacking; they are positioned. Hunger is not weakness; it is an invitation. It draws us closer, keeps us dependent, and leads us into intimacy with God. The promise attached to hunger is clear: “They shall be filled.” God never withholds Himself from a seeking heart.
As you fast today, allow every hunger pang to become a prayer. Let it remind you that your deepest satisfaction is found not in what you consume, but in Whom you pursue. Lean into the hunger. Seek Him deliberately. God never ignores a hungry heart, and He never leaves a seeking soul empty.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, awaken a deeper hunger within me for Your presence and Your righteousness. Expose the places where I have tried to fill my soul with lesser things. Let my desire for You grow stronger than any other craving. Fill me, satisfy me, and draw me closer to Your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
