Daniel Fast Devotional: Day 18 – Compassion for Others
Scripture: “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness… to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out?” (Isaiah 58:6–7)
God’s idea of fasting has always gone beyond abstaining from food, it reaches into the condition of the heart. In Isaiah 58, the Lord reveals that true, biblical fasting awakens compassion and moves us toward the broken, the overlooked, and the oppressed. When we draw near to God, His heart begins to beat within us.
Fasting strips away self-focus. As our own appetites quiet, our awareness of others’ needs increases. The Holy Spirit softens places that may have grown hard through busyness, disappointment, or familiarity. What once felt distant becomes personal. God invites us to see people not as interruptions, but as assignments.
Compassion is not merely sympathy, it is love in action. It compels us to respond, to serve, to give, and to intercede. When we fast with God’s heart in view, we become conduits of His mercy. Chains are broken, burdens are lifted, and healing flows, not only in others, but within us as well.
Isaiah reminds us that when compassion flows, God’s presence follows: “Then your light shall break forth like the morning.” Compassion releases light into dark places. As you continue this fast, ask God to enlarge your heart. Let Him show you who to pray for, who to encourage, and who to serve.
Today, allow God to replace indifference with empathy and convenience with calling. As you carry His heart for people, you reflect His heart to the world.
Today’s Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me with compassion. As I fast, soften my heart and align it with Yours. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me courage to respond in love. Let me be a vessel of Your mercy and grace. Give me Your heart for people, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today’s Focus: True fasting turns our hearts outward to reflect the mercy of God.
